Speaking on ResetEra, user Omnipotent – a notoriously accurate FromSoftware leaker - revealed brand new details about the highly-anticipated game, including what influenced the team and how it will deal with open-world elements. Speaking to one fan who was concerned that Elden Ring’s size would make its world too overwhelming in comparison to previous titles, Omnipotent responded “you don’t really have anything to worry about in terms of how Fromsoft is designing their ‘open world.’" He continues, “they’re pivoting away from even really calling it open-world and moving more towards the distinction of ‘open field’.”

He goes on to discuss that instead of simply enlarging the map, FromSoftware intends to blend the elements of its signature approach towards level design into a bigger setting. In particular, he assures fans that, “there will be open sections as well as more corridor-like sections like [in] past games.” When one user asked how the game compared to the likes of The Witcher and Skyrim in these regards, he responded, “You’re comparing apples to oranges. They may all be medieval ARPG games but they’re constructed so differently.” Clearly, while the game’s world will be much more expansive than the studio’s previous work, that won’t prevent it from being a distinctly FromSoftware game with tight, quality-focused level design.

Speaking about the team’s influences, Omnipotent also revealed that FromSoftware got a lot of influence from Shadow of the Colossus, Team Ico’s widely beloved action game from 2005. What that means for Elden Ring is anyone’s guess, but with Shadow of the Colossus often being held up as one of the greatest video games of all time, it’s evidently not a bad influence to have.

While FromSoftware has remained fairly quiet about Elden Ring, the game has been the subject of a number of leaks and a ton of fan speculation. It seems that it’s shaping up to be the team’s biggest and perhaps best game to date, which makes waiting for its release all the more agonizing for fans.

Elden Ring is currently in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
