Twitch streamer StrayKurtis called attention to the curious datamine in a tweet now being shared among the Elden Ring community. The post on Twitter explains that several unused text prompts were found in Elden Ring’s files. These popups include text labels including “Bloody Finger Rank Advanced,” “Hunter Rank Advanced,” “Recusant Rank Advanced,” “Duelist Rank Advanced,” and “Furled Finger Rank Advanced.” The labels are, obviously, not actually used in Elden Ring.

Each of the labels, as Elden Ring players are aware, refers to a different type of PvP interaction. One interesting example is the difference between the Recusant and the Bloody Finger. Both the Recusant Finger and Bloody Finger work the say way. Using either item will lead to the player invading another player’s world with the goal of defeating them. If successful, the Recusant’s eyes grow golden and the Bloody Finger’s glow red. In other words, they’re all but identical in Elden Ring, perhaps implying there were plans to make them unique that didn’t go through.

Ranks would assumedly work by rewarding successful PvP interactions. Invaders would be rewarded for killing hosts. Hunters would be rewarded for killing Recusants and Bloody Fingers. Duelists would be rewarded for winning duels. Furled Finger ranks could have been earned by being summoned successfully, like the legendary Let Me Solo Her.

Unfortunately, there are no further details regarding how these multiplayer rankings work. It’s possible that there were rewards available for reaching certain ranks. It could even be possible that there would have been story interactions available for progressing through various PvP ranks. NPCs like Bloody Finger Hunter Yura and White Mask Varre definitely feel underutilized in Elden Ring. Perhaps there was more to their stories left on the cutting board.

PvP and co-op ranks aren’t the only multiplayer features that FromSoftware appears to have cut, either. There are several arenas spread across the Lands Between, locations hinted to be for organized PvP and dueling. These locations aren’t actually used in Elden Ring, however. Perhaps all the evidence at hand means FromSoftware is working on a big PvP update for Elden Ring. Or perhaps players will be left wondering what could have been.

Elden Ring is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
