FromSoftware’s latest title has been highly anticipated for some time. A Song of Ice and Fire writer George R.R. Martin laying the groundwork for the world only heightened the hype surrounding Elden Ring. The title certainly seems to be living up to that hype, as many reviews have awarded Elden Ring a perfect 10/10 score. The game takes the well known FromSoftware formula and modifies it to work in an open world setting, and quite successfully.

This new live action trailer is titled “May Death Never Stop You,” quite a fitting motto for a FromSoftware game. The trailer heavily features Ming-Na Wen as she appears alongside snippets of gameplay. Ming-Na speaks of the challenges ahead in The Lands Between, how the quest to become the Elden Lord will be rife with difficulty and many deaths. The trailer also showcases some unique bosses that players will face, along with some perfect review scores that Elden Ring has received.

This trailer can perhaps act as a reminder of the inherent difficulty present in any FromSoftware release. The release of Elden Ring is resurfacing the old debate of whether FromSoftware games are too hard. The difficulty that is baked into these games does act as a barrier to entry for many potential players. However, this challenge is the foundation of FromSoftware games.

That is not to say that the barrier to entry is worth the reputation that Elden Ring and those that came before it have earned. In a time when the gaming industry is putting more emphasis on accessibility, it can be argued that FromSoftware is fighting the current in a way. Although the challenge is a core part of the identity for these games, many people will not be able to fully experience what many outlets have deemed a 10/10 game due to its high level of difficulty.

On the other hand, the challenge of Elden Ring and other releases like it is what attracts players to begin with. To lessen the challenge posed to players in any way would take away from what majority of players come to FromSoftware titles for. Despite the perfect review scores, the title has not come without some issues, as there have been some technical issues plaguing Elden Ring in the days following its release.

Elden Ring is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
