Many players criticized Elden Ring’s endgame at launch, stating that it was too hard, especially for melee users. Since then, fans have figured out various clever tactics to beat difficult bosses. Now, one player shows how to defeat an annoying Elden Ring boss using just a shield.

A Reddit user has shared a clip of their fight against Mohg, the Omen, who is found at the end of the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds in Elden Ring. It shows them defeating Mohg with just a shield and the post’s title states that they don’t recommend fighting the boss using this tactic. The shield in question is the Erdtree Greatshield, which has a unique special ability. The user takes advantage of its Golden Retaliation skill to deflect magic attacks back at Mohg, dealing 600-700 damage with every hit.
It takes a while for them to defeat Mohg, but the video proves that any tactic is viable in Elden Ring if used correctly. Fans interested in trying out this strategy can get the Erdtree Greatshield after killing a duo of Tree Sentinels in the Altus Plateau region. The Erdtree Greatshield is considered to be one of the best shields in Elden Ring, as it also comes with 100% damage protection against physical attacks.
Defeating this boss clears the way to Elden Ring’s Lord of the Frenzied Flame ending, but players are required to clear a tricky jumping puzzle before they can inherit the flame. It should be noted that the user is fighting Mohg, the Omen, and not Mohg, Lord of Blood, who is generally considered to be much harder, perhaps due to his unique move-set in the second phase.
The poster has also shared a link to the uncut version of the fight, confirming that it lasts for over 5 minutes. They mention that they missed many Golden Retaliations, and aim to try this tactic against Mohg, Lord of Blood. Many fans are surprised that it’s even possible to deflect his attacks, while some others discuss the specifications of the Golden Retaliation skill. This video serves as an excellent way to show Elden Ring’s combat depth and perhaps the user will share a similar video featuring Mohg, Lord of Blood if they manage to defeat him.
Elden Ring is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
