RELATED: The Most Stressful Open-World Games

At the base of each one of these belfries is a mysterious waygate, but players won’t be able to simply walk up to these gates and transport through them. First, they’ll need to unlock the mysterious seal that guards them, by using a special Imp Statute nearby. Unfortunately, regular Stonesword Keys won’t work on these special statues, they’ll only accept Imbued Sword Keys. There are three of these special keys to be found in Elden Ring.

Updated January 3rd, 2023 by Jacob Buchalter: Imbued Sword Keys in Elden Ring are not the same thing as Stonesword Keys. Rather, these keys unlock very specific Waygates in the Four Belfries that can teleport the Tarnished all over the Lands Between. Now, one of these keys is very easy to find, but the other two aren’t quite as simple. So, let’s take a look and see exactly how players are supposed to locate these mystical keys in one of 2022’s most popular games, Elden Ring.

Where Do The Four Belfries Lead?

Once players have access to all three Imbued Sword Keys, they can open every gate available in The Four Belfries. Players can access these gates at any time as long as they have a key within their inventory and don’t need to wait until they collect all of them. After using the key on one of the gates, the key is removed from their inventory, and the gate is unlocked permanently, which anyone familiar with RPGs should expect.

Here’s a look at where the gates go that lie below each belfry, starting at the one at the bottom-most part of the hill, and moving upward:

Waygate #1 (Bottom) - This first waygate will transport players to one of the end-game zones, Farum Azula, the sleeping place of one of the Ancient Dragons. This gives players a glance at what they can expect as they progress through Elden Ring’s storyline. Within this section of Crumbling Farum Azula, players can jump down a series of platforms to reach a chest containing the Pearldrake Talisman. Players, however, will sadly not be able to access the rest of Crumbling Farum Azula from here. Waygate #2 (Middle) - The second belfry Waygate leads players back to the Chapel of Anticipation, the area even before the tutorial where Elden Ring truly begins. This will allow them to re-enter the boss fight against The Grafted Scion. Additionally, players can find a dead maiden for Varre’s questline (villainous as it is) here as well as a few other key items, so there’s plenty of worth in returning to this location. Waygate #3 (Top) - The third and final Waygate will put players in Nokron, the Eternal City, technically one of the locations of one of Elden Ring’s endings. Here they can leap down onto a bridge-like structure to find the Mottled Necklace and a Lesser Crucible Knight. Like with the first Waygate and Farum Azula, Players will not be able to access the rest of Nokron, Eternal City from here.

Imbued Sword Key #1

Players won’t have to look hard or travel far in this open-world game for the first Imbued Sword Key as it’s actually found right where it’s used at The Four Belfries in Liurnia of the Lakes. Three of these Belfries have a Waygate sitting at their base, with a vague description for each location they take you to besides. The fourth Belfry, located at the very top of the hill, has a chest beneath it instead of a Waygate.

Inside the chest is the first Imbued Sword Key, which can be taken and used at any of the other Belfry Waygates, regardless of order. This is one of the rare examples in Elden Ring where looking it up beforehand seems worth it, because once a key is used, it’s gone, and the player will need to find another key if they picked the wrong Waygate.

Imbued Sword Key #2

To get the second Imbued Sword Key, players will need to reach, unlock, and enter the Raya Lucaria Academy. This can be done by snagging a special Glintstone Key to access the area. Once inside, players should progress to the Debate Parlor, home of the Red Wolf of Radagon boss fight. After clearing this big red dog, head out from the Debate Parlor Site of Grace to the courtyard and up a staircase on the left side of the area.

There are a lot of basic enemies here as well as two sorcerers, but players can easily run past them and jump off the railing at the top of the stairs. The player should have now reached the rooftops of Raya Lucaria, and after jumping off another railing the Tarnished should see a ladder going up. Up here there are lots of Avianettes (the flying puppet enemies) and a Twinsage sorcerer. Once players get past them and jump off the right side of the building ahead to reach lower levels of the rooftops.

Continue to progress down the rooftops until the Tarnished sees another Marionette enemy (with one patrolling off in the distance). Players can leap down and kill the Marionette closest to them and then immediately jump down to the right to land on another rooftop. There, in the small gazebo-like area at the end of the long roof section is a corpse containing the Imbued Sword Key.

Imbued Sword Key #3

The final Imbued Sword Key location is in the zone of Caelid that earns Elden Ring its dark fantasy title. Players will need to make their way to Sellia, Town of Sorcery, and complete the brazier puzzle there to release the seals blocking passages and chests all over town. This Imbued Sword Key is in one of these chests.

After lighting all three braziers in Sellia (just look for the tallest buildings), head behind one of the cliffside streets to find a sort of back alley. In a small alcove at the very end of this backroad is a chest containing the Imbued Sword Key. This one is relatively hard to get, especially considering all of the invisible shenanigans in Sellia.

Elden Ring is available now for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S.
