It’s not necessary to link one’s Steam account to Elder Scrolls Online to play the MMO on PC, but it does make it a lot easier to boot up. It’s not a difficult process at all and having your ESO and Steam accounts linked can make it much faster to boot up and start the game via the platform.
What’s The Point Of Linking Your Account?
The main benefit of linking an Elder Scrolls Online account to Steam is that it lets players log into the game without having to type out their information. As long as the Steam version of ESO is installed (not the separate launcher) setting up this link essentially lets players skip the in-game login screen, taking them directly to character selection.

The other benefit to linking your Steam and ESO accounts is being able to use the Steam interface while playing the MMO. It’s much more convenient for talking to friends, for example, through the Steam interface than through Zenimax.
How To Link An ESO Account To Steam
By buying Elder Scrolls Online via Steam, most of the work is already done for you. Starting ESO via the Steam version of the game prompts the player to either login or create a new account, the latter of which automatically links to the Steam account it was launched from.
If you already have an ESO account but want to install the Steam version of the game instead, head to the Account page of the Elder Scrolls Online website. In the Account Summary section, there should be a tab for Linked Accounts. Click this and you’ll be presented with a variety of platforms your ESO account can be linked to. Click the Steam option, which will bring up a separate window for you to login to your Steam Account. Follow the prompts, and after only about a minute’s effort you’ll cut out the hassle of typing out your login info every time you want to play ESO!
